Today I volunteered at College Park School in one of the pre-school classrooms. My Aunt, Mrs. Eager has been a pre-school teacher there for some time. She loves her job and thrives on the challenge of creating a learning environment that ensures that no child starts school without the basic skills they need to succeed. The atmosphere was fun as young children learn through play.
College Park is a bilingual school so we played games and sang songs in both English and French. I was happy to be able to participate in all of the activities as I began taking French in Kindergarten and continued to take classes through high school. This last semester I took French 106 at the University of Saskatchewan as one of my electives.
The students were adorable and all of them were excited to have a volunteer help in the classroom. I saw great qualities in these children; they were fun, happy, smart, and generous. During snack time, they recognized that I had not brought a snack so quite a few of them shared their snacks with me.
A few girls from an older grade heard that ‘Miss Teen Saskatoon’ was helping out in the pre-school room so they came to show their support and have their picture taken with me. It was great to hear their stories and aspirations.
I enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with the students and support bilingualism in Canada!
